Organised by the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology), NNBW aims to encourage everyone to put up nest boxes in their garden or local area
Put up nestboxes in order to promote and enhance biodiversity and conservation of our breeding birds and wildlife.
There used to be a NNB Day via Birdwatch Ireland in 2009 but it doesn't seem to have resurfaced since so, I am summarily and unilaterally designating this week to be NNBW in Ireland too.
Natural nest sites for birds such as holes in trees or old buildings are disappearing fast as gardens are ‘tidied’ and old buildings are repaired or left to totally degrade. Whether in your garden or as part of a local wildlife group in the surrounding parks, community gardens or woodlands, nestboxes will help to support local bird conservation and supplement nesting sites.
You can buy nestboxes at your local garden centres, from the bird conservation organisations and on-line, or you could make your own. Click the link for info on making an easy nest box and where to site them.....no excuses. GO.
